Who doesn’t appreciate a sincere compliment? Compliments help us feel appreciated, instill feelings of gratitude and lead to feelings of social togetherness. Teaching children with pragmatic or social language challenges how and when to make a compliment is a beneficial use of therapy time. Children who are successful with giving compliments will experience more positive social interactions within their day. This can lead to more positive feelings about their abilities as social communicators.
The first battle is getting children to understand the benefits of compliments. At the same time, some frank discussions of what is and what is NOT a compliment need to be occurring. We designed Valentine’s Day Compliments to address that skill.
